2008 - Recreation / Récréation, Arts / Vie artistique

Howard Junior Public School- Toronto, ON

Howard Public School Rejuvenation Committee conducted a community wide consultation to explore opportunities to improve community, recreation, play and artistic expression. The entire student community, which is both economically and racially diverse, will create student-designed painted benches for the school yard and create unique design and painting of playground games such as 4 squares and hop-scotch. Students will learn about the elements of design (colour, line, shape, form and space). By involving local artists in our community, students are supported and engaged to reach our goal.

Chebucto Heights Elementary School’s Cultural Heritage- Halifax, NS

Nova Scotia has a particularly rich textile heritage, ranging from traditional crafts such as rug hooking and knitting to Native American beading, felting and embroidery with coloured porcupine quills, to personal stories and family traditions being transmitted through traditional quilting, to rather contemporary textile expressions. While supporting core curricular activities in social studies, language arts and visual arts, this project allows our students to work with a number of different local textile artists to explore this rich local heritage and link it to their family history.

Henderson Elementary- Powell River, BC

This project includes having each child make a plywood cut out of an object such as a ball, flower or butterfly, then paint it, weatherproof it and have it fastened to the thousands of feet of chain link that surround our kids school. The point of this project is to get our kids excited about where they spend their days, work together for a common goal, to decorate their surroundings with something artistically created by them so that they will respect it, care about it and most importantly regain some good old fashioned school spirit.

I think that 200 handmade peices of art hung around our school grounds would give the children many reasons to be proud of what they worked together to accomplish. It would inspire creativity while working on the project and a sense of accomplishment and teamwork when the are through. This project would not only benefit these 200 children but would also benefit every child who will ever attend Henderson as well as every member of this comunity. I think all of the students will enjoy great satisfaction in being a part of this goal oriented, artistically inclined beautification project.
