Glace Bay Elementary Basketball Camp
Funded by the S’Cool Life Fund
On Saturday, September 23, 2006, almost 30 girls from Grades 4, 5 and 6 gathered in the Glace Bay Elementary gymnasium for a free day-long basketball camp. Instructor for the camp was Coach Fabian McKenzie, Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball Team at Cape Breton University. Along with Coach McKenzie were 12 members of his team, silver medalists at the 2006 CIS National Championships. Coach McKenzie was named National Coach of the Year in the CIS for 2006.
From 9 AM until 4 PM, the girls enjoyed games and drills, instruction and laughs as Coach McKenzie and his players taught the fundamentals of basketball in an informative, entertaining, and most importantly, FUN day. Lunch was provided for the girls and every camper went home with a T-shirt to remember the event. The previous Friday evening, Coach McKenzie conducted a three-hour coaching clinic for fifteen local basketball coaches. His presentation included techniques for teaching fundamentals, effective strategies for dealing with parents, and advice on keeping the game fun for the players. The reaction to this clinic was very positive, with all the coaches eager for more sessions.
Although these were the most visible results of the generous funding from the S’Cool Life Fund, they were far from the only benefits. The School was also able to purchase 30 new practice balls, 4 new game balls, a new compressor/inflator and reversible mesh practice jerseys for both of the School’s girls’ teams. School administrators, volunteer coaches and the players all appreciate the support provided by the S’Cool Life Fund. The equipment and instruction received will make a positive difference in the lives of a lot of children in the Glace Bay area.
